Matthew Harvell

Chicago-based bassoonist and contrabassoonist, Matthew Harvell, is active as a freelance performer on orchestral and chamber stages, appearing with International Chamber Artists, Ars Viva Symphony, Chicago Sinfonietta, Chicago Philharmonic, and Music of the Baroque.

Previously, he spent 17 seasons as a member of the Richmond Symphony and performed regularly with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra, among many orchestras nationwide.

Harvell has served on the faculties of Lake Forest College, Trinity International University, and the University of Richmond. He has presented masterclasses nationwide and has performed at multiple International Double Reed Society conventions.

His principal teachers were David Sogg, Richard Beene, and John Wetherill, with extensive additional coaching from Norman Herzberg, Lew Kirk, Chris Millard, Judy LeClair, and Danielle Damiano, and chamber music mentorship from Harry Sargous, Lowell Greer, Robert Spillman, György Ligeti, and Gustav Meier.
