ABOUT THE BIRCH CREEK SYMPHONY PROGRAM

Birch Creek’s program is unique in symphony and chamber music education in that it incorporates a student/mentor approach in virtually every aspect of training. Students rehearse and perform alongside their teachers, receiving an abundance of personal attention. In such a nurturing environment, students progress at an amazing rate. Six public performances of four completely different orchestral programs are given over the two-week session. Consequently, students develop excellent practice habits and rehearsal skills
.

AREAS OF STUDY

  • Repertoire A mixture of standard orchestral literature and light classics is rehearsed and performed. A partial list of major works for 2009 includes Max Bruch Scottish Fantasy in Eb Major, Op. 46, Dvorak Slavonic Dance, Op.46 No. 6 in D Major, and Mendelssohn Symphony No. 3 in a minor, Op. 56 (Scottish).

  • Orchestra Rehearsals (2-4 hours daily depending on performance schedule and repertoire).

  • Sectionals (1 hour daily) In classes of like instruments, students learn from experienced faculty how to prepare difficult orchestral passages in a short time for the next rehearsal or concert.

  • Chamber Ensembles (1 hour daily) Students experience another facet of the professional musician’s life with chamber ensemble performance opportunities during concert preludes and intermissions.

  • Specialized Classes (2 hours daily) Technique, theory, and seminars on topics pertinent to the music profession round out the weekly schedule.

Note: Prospective applicants should refer to the Suggested Symphony Repertoire Levels contained in the application materials.

WHAT STUDENTS SAY
READ WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT BIRCH CREEK

"Both the reward and the challenge of teaching at BC is that we take challenging orchestra programs that might seem impossible at first and make them playable. We work many hours with the students every day. The greatest reward is that many students have told us that they found inspiration by attending Birch Creek and became motivated to pursue excellence on their instruments."

-- Robert Hanford, Concertmaster and Violin Faculty                                   Member

"My experience at Birch Creek was life-changing. Up until that point I was pursuing a music career in the jazz field. During the Symphony session we played Sibelius Symphony No. 2. On our first performance, we played to the audience and for ourselves in the barn under the evening sky. This piece had so much feeling and emotion and was so beautiful that I almost started to cry. I fell in love with orchestra . . . [now] my goal is to play trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra."

"The individualized attention that each player received from our instructors brought us together as a section, and let us explore the emotions and music elements of each piece. The environment created was both encouraging and friendly, letting us all experiment, work, and improve with ease."

READ WHAT FACULTY MEMBERS HAVE SAID ABOUT BIRCH CREEK

"To me, it's truly rewarding to hear the students at BC perform the great symphonic and chamber music at such a high level. By the end of the session, they have certainly developed into better musicians from this experience.

"The fact that there are only 2 weeks for the students to learn a huge amount of orchestral and chamber repertoire presents a big challenge to the faculty. We have to help the students focus on their efforts in order to get the best results in such a short period of time. We want them to get a sense of how quickly one has to learn music (and how to budget one's time) in the professional world."
