ABOUT THE PERCUSSION & STEELPAN PROGRAM

The Percussion & Steelpan program is considered to be one of the most comprehensive summer education experiences for the young percussionist/drummer. Through hands-on experience in performance, small-group instruction, and master classes, students learn an excellent working knowledge of all the instruments and styles essential for today's percussionist. The Birch Creek program provides an environment not found on large lecture-style campuses. Our small size and busy concert schedule challenge each student, whatever his or her level, to learn and perform at a pace found on the professional music scene.

All students perform in the Birch Creek Steel Bands, World Drumming Ensembles from Brazil, Cuba, and Africa, and theater pieces, á la Blue Man Group and Stomp. Students also perform in Percussion and Mallet ensembles, and participate in classes in world percussion, drum set, theory, and computers & MIDI.

WHAT PAST STUDENTS SAY
READ WHAT STUDENTS HAVE SAID ABOUT BIRCH CREEK

"I saw the Web site and things look really great up there. I went on the road shortly last fall and the drummer had been an instructor there in the 80s--small world. It's really cool to see Birch Creek grow. I only wish I could be part of it again, some day . . ."

Marimba
"It is quite possible that I learned as much about the art and performance of percussion than I had in my 6 or so years as a percussionist prior to 2 weeks at Birch Creek. The performances given by Robert Chappell and Liam Teague have propelled my musical mind into great new heights of vigor."
At intermission on concert night, students move marimbas to Juniper Hall in the Rehearsal Center for a short performance before the concert begins again.
