Perfect Pitch Capital Campaign for Birch Creek

students

Each summer, some of the most well-known professional musicians in the country teach and mentor promising and highly motivated young musicians ages 12-19 from Wisconsin, the Midwest and beyond during four two-week resident sessions at Birch Creek just outside Egg Harbor. As we enter our fourth decade, we are operating at overflow capacity. Approximately 200 students will enroll each summer and be taught by nearly 100 faculty members during the day and then perform alongside them at night. Simply stated, we have outgrown our capacity to serve the students and faculty who attend.

THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS

Student sleeping space limits the number of applicants we can accept in each gender and does not offer us flexibility in accommodating students with special needs. Up to 26 students must use bathrooms in a building other than where they sleep. During the jazz session, 50 boys share 4 showers. Instruments worth thousands of dollars need to be stored properly during summer and winter months. Currently, delicate yet heavy percussion instruments are carried up steep stairs to the barn loft, risking injury to both persons and instruments.
Two trailers are rented during the Symphony Session for Teaching Assistant housing. Faculty, with rigorous teaching and performance schedules, are often housed two and three to a room.
Rehearsal areas oftentimes are outdoors under tents and in small rooms, risking damage to instruments. Frequently, students are unable to find space to practice individually.

To Meet These Needs
We have embarked on a Capital Campaign that will add 3 new buildings to our 40-acre campus. The new buildings will directly address our student and faculty needs during the summer, and provide Birch Creek with four-season facilities in which we can extend our "shoulder season" activities in our local community.
Birch Creek's Capital Campaign has a goal of $3 million. Since May of 2006, our board, staff, and volunteer solicitors have quietly raised more than $1.5 million. We hope to raise the remainder of our goal during the public phase of our campaign in the summer of 2007.

Tentative plans place ground breaking in September 2007 and project completion by May of 2008--in time for the arrival of 2008 faculty and students.
