OUTREACH: ARTISTS IN THE SCHOOLS

Birch Creek independently sustains an outreach program that reaches between 200 to 400 Door County public school students annually. Birch Creek faculty members visit high school and middle school instrumental music classrooms and conduct half-day seminars. They perform and demonstrate basic to advanced techniques based on the levels of the students. The willingness of our summer faculty members and public school music teachers to partner together has made this educational outreach program a success.

November 2008
In 2008, Birch Creek’s Artists in the Schools brought jazz faculty members Jeff Campbell, Program Director and bass, Reggie Thomas, piano, and Rick Haydon, guitar, back to Door County school districts, building upon prior years' workshops in jazz workshops incorporating the blues, scatting, improvising, and rhythm internalization.

Birch Creek continues to support the increasing nationwide effort to bring music programs, performers and clinicians into public schools. Jazz has been the focus of Artists in the Schools outreach in 2006, 2007, and again in 2008. Campbell, Thomas and Haydon provided assistance to students and educators.

These three jazz artists add their names to a growing list of Birch Creek faculty members who have served as rich resources for Door County public schools without cost to the schools.

Launched in 2001-2002 with the support of private gifts and a grant from the Peninsula Arts Association and the Wisconsin Arts Board, Artists in the Schools was underwritten in 2008 through a grant from an anonymous donor. The program continues to bring nationally-recognized musicians into Door County schools for hands-on workshops.
