Percussion & Steel Band Academy


Are you ready to take your percussion playing to the next level?
If the answer is yes, then Birch Creek is the place for you. Located in the beautiful upper peninsula of Door County, Wisconsin, Birch Creek Percussion features a unique learning community approach to education that focuses on individual student growth in small and large group settings. You will work with some of the nation’s top percussion educators, composers, and performers every day — learn from them, watch them perform, and perform with them. Immerse yourself in a world of percussion and emerge as a more confident performer, knowledgeable musician, and inspired person. Learn successful practice strategies, effective time management, hone your organizational and leadership skills, and get tips on auditioning and career guidance.

Opportunities to Learn:

drumset practice

Concert Percussion

Fine tune your fundamental percussion skills on snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle, cymbals, etc.)

Mallet Percussion

Study 2 and 4 mallet technique, sight reading, and repertoire on marimba and vibraphone. Learn music theory and Improvisation.


You will have the opportunity to work with experienced composers to create your own music and hear it performed by a live ensemble.

Percussion Ensemble

Perform new and challenging music both in large and small ensembles, conducted and coached by Birch Creek’s outstanding percussion faculty.

Drum Set

Learn different musical styles and techniques.

Steel Band

Performance, technique, history, composing, and arranging for steel band led by Birch Creek’s outstanding steel band faculty.

World Percussion

Experience a variety of world music styles.

Program Director: Dan Moore

Dan Moore is an internationally recognized vibes/marimba artist, educator, composer, and music producer. He is Professor of Music and directs the award winning percussion program at the University of Iowa.

Steel Band Director: Liam Teague

Renown steel pan artist and composer, Liam Teague, is Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University where he is Co-Director of the Northern Illinois University Steel Band. He is the arranger for the PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars Steel Orchestra in Trinidad and Tobago.
