2018 Directors, Guest Artists and Faculty

Program Director: Dan Moore

Dan Moore is an internationally recognized vibes/marimba artist, percussion educator, composer and producer. Dr. Moore is Professor of Music and directs the award-winning percussion program at the University of Iowa School of Music.

Steel Band Director: Liam Teague

Liam Teague is a virtuoso steel pan performer, composer and educator. He is head of Steel Pan Studies and Professor of Music at Northern Illinois University. He is the arranger for the PCS Nitrogen Silver Stars Steel Orchestra in Trinidad and Tobago.

Special Guest Artist: Michael Burritt

Michael Burritt is an internationally acclaimed marimba soloist and percussion artist who performs throughout the world. Professor Burritt is head of the Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion Department at the Eastman School of Music. He is also a Birch Creek alumnus.

Special Guest Duo: Oregano Percussion

Oregano Percussion is a Toronto-based group, featuring Birch Creek alumnus Dr. Michelle Colton and percussionist Alejandro Céspedes, that performs music from around the world. With a vast array of percussion instruments, they combine different styles from Latin to Caribbean music, songwriter pop, percussion chamber music and world/jazz. Their spicy touch focuses on new and traditional tunes from various world cultures.

Areas of Study:

drumset practice

Concert Percussion

Fine tune your fundamental percussion skills on snare drum, keyboard instruments, timpani, and accessory instruments (tambourine, triangle, cymbals, etc.)

Mallet Percussion

Study 2 and 4 mallet technique, sight reading, and repertoire on marimba and vibraphone. Learn music theory and Improvisation.

Percussion Ensemble

Under the guidance of some of the most knowledgeable conductor/teachers, you will engage with important music for percussion ensemble—from classic repertoire to the newest compositions, world music, and novelty selections.

Steel Band

The Birch Creek Steel Band provides an exciting opportunity to perform with, and learn from, steel pan virtuoso Liam Teague. You will learn performance techniques, steel pan history, and composing and arranging for steel pans.


Birch Creek gives you the unique opportunity to learn about composing for percussion. You will learn composition and arranging techniques and even have the chance to write your own music under the guidance of Composer in Residence Brian Nozny as well as other faculty and guest composers.

Drum Set

Learn new musical styles and techniques and fine tune your chops.

World Percussion

Experience a variety of world music styles. Birch Creek Faculty Artists have a wide range of expertise in musical styles from around the world.
